- Summary
- A report is presented to show the theoretical results of reactivity changes resulting from fuel movement in the third core of the SRE. A hydraulic pressure or thermal gradient across the fuel elements and the fuel cluster may cause sufficient fuel element bowing or off-center displacement of the fuel cluster to produce undesirable changes in the reactivity. The maximum reactivity changes resulting from fuel element bowing and fuel cluster displacement can be restricted by a fuel cluster spacer and support assembly. Displacement of bowing of the fuel within the fuel jacket may also cause undesirable reactivity changes which can be restricted by a fuel spacer. The results presented indicate the tolerances required for the fuel cluster spacer and support assembly and the tolerance required between the fuel and fuel jacket. Various means of reducing the displacement and bowing coefficients are also discussed. (auth)
