A parallel-plate gridded ionization chamber for alphaparticle group analysis is described. The chamber operates with welding grade argon gas at over atmospheric pressure, purified by hot (350 deg C) calcium turnings in a double purification system. Amplified pulses from the chamber are fed in a single- channel spectrometer with a variable channel width from 0.2 to 2 volt (50% geometry is attained for uncollimated samples). Radium-226 vacuum-sublimated samples are used to calibrate the equipment. The obtained resolution (total peak width at half-heigth) is 85 kev for the radium-226 peak and 75 kev for the radon- 222 peak, using radium-226 vacuum-sublimated samples mounted on stainless steel disks.
