ABS>The reduction of gamma radiation to tolerance levels in irradiated fuel sandwichcs containing 0.5 g of UO/sub 2/ during removal from the MTR to a lead shipping coffin and subsequently during transit was studied. It was found that an 11-in. shipping coffin will reduce the gamma flux below the tolerance levels. Due to weight limitations, the additional lead should be on the inside of the coffin, cutting the inside diameter down to 4 in. instead of 6 in. An annular lead ring, 8 in. thick and 16 in. wide, around the plug hole of the MTR reduces the flux below physical tolerance at a point 3 ft from both the surface of the coffin and the reactor.
