- Summary
- Sale of a slave on a credit of 6 months for [dollars] 1,106 on 17 December 1836 to John B Bunn pursuant to an interlocutory decree as part of various legal proceedings to settle debts. Bunn and Cooper were sureties on the promissory note. Melton, as commissioner delivered the note to the county court to the clerk Arthur Whitfield. He asked Ricks to discount the note to him as he was badly pressed for funds. Ricks at first refused as he knew that Whitfield was insolvent. As a further inducement Whitfield said that [dollars] 500 could be used to settle debts that Whitfield owed Ricks. Ricks declined to take the note without endorsement from Melton. This was eventually organised. Interest was to be paid half yearly to Zaney Lewis during her life time. Ricks then advanced [dollars] 170 to Whitfield in cash and took the endorsed note into his possession as security. Ricks then allocated the proceeds. Bunting and Arrington were sureties on another note for which [dollars] 230 was allocated in part settlement. Whitfield then absconded shortly afterwards. Suit filed by relators against the sureties. Bill filed by sureties against Whitfield, Ricks, Melton, Zaney Lewis and other relators.
