The defendant was sued as the surety of Jonathan Davis, to whom the plaintiff had hired some slaves. The defendant claimed a reduction in the amount owed, to allow for some of the slaves having been ill and others having absconded. The district court deducted [dollars] 370 from the amount ordered to be paid to the plaintiff, and the plaintiff appealed. The Supreme Court reversed the emendation and ordered [dollars] 660 to be paid.
