Bill for an amount and payment of a legacy under a clause in the will of Maxwell Chambers. The complainant was a slave of Maxwell Chambers and the defendants were the executors of his will. The clause in the dispute was ruled to be imperative and the plaintiff was entitled to whatever sum may be found necessary as an annual support during his life. The clause made provision for kind treatment of the slaves, including two elderly slaves, Lucy and Peter. Interest on [dollars] 1,500 of the testator's Wilmington bonds was to be used to support them during their lives. Any surplus was to go to the trustees of Davidson College.
