The object of the studies discussed is to determine the amount of energy absorbed by the steel shells of a 2600pound cask falling horizontally from a height of 23 ft. In addition, information is presented which will help predict the failure of similar casks dropped from different heights. The results of 22 drop tests are summarized. Included in the 22 tests were five tests of larger casks, weighing about 11,350 lbs. The larger cask test results compared favorably with the smaller cask test results. (auth)
