Electric fields commonly used to reduce sensitive time in a spark chamber introduce some problems, such as shifts in spark positions, when the spark chamber is used in a magnetic field. The usefulness of chemical clearing agents (gases with electron affinity) should not, however, be affected by magnetic fields. It is found that 1/2% SO/sub 2/ in Ne at 1.3 atm. in a spark chamber with 50 3-mm gaps reduces track efficiency at 2 mu sec total delay to less than 20% of the efficiency at 0.39 mu sec, and is substantially unaffected by 10 kgauss field, while 1% SO/sub 2/ clears even faster.
