- Summary
- A series of niobium carbides, NbC/sub x/, was burned in an oxygen bomb calorimeter. The carbides covered a range from x = 0.459 to x = 0.984. Extrapolation of ihe curve, DELTA H= 6.06 - 70.95x + 30.75x/sup 2/, obtained for eight compositions (NbC/sub 0.6//sub 86/ through NbC/sub 0.9//sub 84/) to x = 1 gave -33.6 plus or minus 0.6 Kcal/mole as the heat of formation of NbC. The heat of formation of Nb/sub 2//sup C/as -46.6 plus or minus 1.2 kcal/mole. Combustion>s of powdered Nb metal gave a heat of formation of -454.4 plus or minus 1.6 kcal/mole for Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/. A comparison of these values with those of other workers is made. (auth)
