- Summary
- Courses were given on general chemical laboratory methods, radioisotope techniques, cytogenetics, and plant breeding. A laboratory manual of soil chemical analysis was published in Spanish. Cesium/sup 137/ and Co/sup 60/ irradiators were built for use in seed and insect irradiations. Preliminary results are reported from studies on control of the Mediterranean fruit fly, (Ceratitis capitata), by releasing males sterilized by gamma irradiation. Adult flies labeled with P/sup 32/ or Sr/sup 89/ were released in studies of population density. Preliminary resuits are presented from studies of radiation stimulation of root and shoot growth in several plant varieties, mutations induced in several plant varieties by irradiation of seed, tracer studies of foliar absorption of nutrients by plants, the effects of chronic gamma irradiation on the growth of palms, cocos, and bananas. Results are also reported on the effects of various treatments on cold-killed cacao seeds and the use of black plastic as a mulch substitute for coffee seedlings. (C.H.)
