- Summary
- A survey was made to review present knowledge concerning the nature of the point defects present in a deformed metal, the mechanisms by which these defects are produced, and the ways in which they anneal out. Before the discussion of plastic deformation, however, a review is given of available information that relates to the more important physlcal properties of point defects. This information was obtained from theoretical calculations and from experiments which are thought to be simpler than plastic deformation experiments, that is, from: measurements of equilibrium defect concentrations at elevated temperatures; quenching-in and subsequent annealing of non-equilibrium defects; and low temperature radiation damage and annealing. With the aid of this information, a critical review of plastic deformation experiments is given and a discussion of the role of point defects is attempted. (auth)
