- Summary
- The decay of the Sc/supp 44/ g.s. was investigated using a Ti/sup 44/ source and scintillation spectrometry. In addition to the main mode of decay to the 1.16-Mev level in Ca/supp 44/, there is a weak electron capture transition to a 2.67-MeV level which is depopulated by a 1.50 to 1.16-Mev gamma cascade and a weak 2.67-Mev crossover transition. The Sc/sup 44m/ (2.4 day) decay was reinvestigated and the results compared with the Sc/sup 44/ g.s. decay. This comparison showed that there are weak electron capture branches from the isomeric level directly to excited levels of Ca/sup 44/. The main feature of the Sc/sup 44m/ decay is the population of a level in Caw at 3.30 Mev followed by a triple cascade involving gamma rays of 1.02, 1.12, and 1.16 Mev. The spins of the ground state and the isomeric level of Sc/sup 44/ were recently measured to be 2+ and 6+, respectively. This knowledge coupled with information concerning the decay process made possible the assignment of spins and parities to a number of the excited levels of Caw. (auth)
