THE SPECTRUM, THE EXCITATION AND IONIZATION CROSS-SECTIONS FOR PHOTO PROCESSES AND FOR COLLISIONS, OF FIVE TIMES IONIZED OXYGEN. Quarterly Report No. 8, March 1, 1963 to May 31, 1963
The survey of available atomic data on O(VI) was completed by examining the cross sections for excitation and ionization by electron impact. Excitation cross sections were calculated by the semi-classical symmetrized impact parameter (IP), Coulomb-Bethe, and Coulomb-Born approximations. Classical theory was found to give reliable estimates for ionization cross sections; while the IP method, inapplicable to ionization, works well for excitation. Photoionization cross sections calculated for O(VI) are presented. Tables of matrix elements that enter into the calculation of photoionization cross sections as functions of n, l, z, z, and incident energy are also included. (D.C.W.)
