- Summary
- Several photographs, a core, and a bottom dredge were taken from the ocean bottom southeast of Bermuda. The photographs show areas (32 deg 26' N 62 deg 59' W) clear of any debris and areas (26 deg 35' N 56 deg 29 deg W) thickly strewn with volcanic debris. The core is described as manganese nodules in soft red clay to 314 cm, followed by an abrupt change to foram ooze and a bottom of volcanic debris mixed with forams and a volcanic rock chunk. The dredge sample obtained at 21 deg 15' N 56 deg 09' W was found to be chunks of clay covered with a manganese oxide layer. The outer layer and inner clay body were analyzed separately; the results show, the outer- layer to be a ferro-manganesealumino- silicate system which may be considered as a manganese nodule. A possible mechanism for the formation of the outer layer is suggested. No correlation between the composition and that of sea water is apparent. (D.L.C.)
