- Summary
- The formation and properties of graphite are described. Information is included on surface area, density, magnetic susceptibilitie s, x-ray diffraction data, thermoelectric power of graphite as affected by oxygen chemisorption, iron catalysis of the graphite-carbon dioxide reaction, kinetics of the graphite- carbon dioxide and graphite-oxygen reactions, electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power studies of boron-doped graphite, effect of oxidation on the surface heterogeneity of some graphitized carbons, measurement of area of molecular sieve carbons, adsorption of tracer xenon on carbons, and light microscope motion pictures of graphite single crystal oxidation. The mechanisms of fission gas diffusion in graphite are studied along the lines of structure, history, composition, radiation damage, and pore structure. The distribution of recoils and energy within selected recoil-atom source and target geometries are investigated. Solutions for the following problems are obtained: recoil distribution in a flat-plate source with non-uniform recoil generation rate, recoil distribution in a flat-plate source and target combination in which the recoil ranges are equal, and recoil momentum escape from a flat-plate source.
