- Summary
- A high-pressure He--Xe gas scintillator was developed for use in analyzing neutron spin polarization. Details of the counter design and operation are presented. The characteristics of this detector for various He--Xe gaseous mixtures were investigated at pressures up to 1000 psi. With p,p - diphenylstilbene as a wave, length shifter, the optimum resolution for 5.48-Mev alpha particles (Am/sup 24/) is approximately 20%. This resolution is roughiy pressure independent for partial pressures of very pure He above 100 psi. The effect of the N/sub 2/ impurity cortert in the He is also indicated. The long- term stability of the counter is excellent. (auth)
