ABS>A combined infrared absorbing and red transmitting filter protected individuals from tentinal burns and allowed performance of typical visual tasks required of a pilot flying an aircraft wtthin 20 to 80 seconds following the fiash of an atomic bomb detonation. Results are included from an experiment using700 rabbits exposed to six predawn atomic blasts at distances varying from 2 to 42.5 miles. It was found that retinal damage varied with the bomb kilotonnage and diminisbed with the distance of the animals from the flash. (C.H.)
