- Annotation This report describes the results of a study, sponsored by the US Social Security Administration's Office of Disability, on the diagnosis of mental retardation for disability benefit purposes. The report assesses the process used by the Social Security Administration to identify individuals with cognitive limitations, and evaluates the existing disability determination process in the context of current scientific knowledge and clinical practice. The editors are affiliated with the Committee on Disability Determination for Mental Retardation, part of the Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education of the National Research Council.
