Summary

This special issue contains selected peer-reviewed papers presented atthe Eighth International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids(DSL-2012) held at the Hotel Kalyon Istanbul, Turkey during the period 25th-29thJune, 2012. The goal of the conference was to provide a unique opportunity toexchange information, to present the latest results as well as to review therelevant issues oncontemporary diffusion research. Young scientists were especially encouraged to attend the conference and to establish international networks with well-known scientists. As well as reporting research results and surveying the literature, the68 selected papers grapple with issues concerning the conduct of researchitself. The topics include preparing cobalt ferrite-silicon core shell nanoparticlesdoped with ferromagnetic manganese for possible biological application, thermal expansion in copper and nickel sulfides and their alloys, describingthe drying of whole bananas with a diffusion model that uses a numericalsolution through generalized coordinates, analyzing the substructure ofhigh-manganese steels in the context of a dominant stress mechanism, theimpact of selected structure parameters of reinforcing preforms formetal-matrix composites on their saturation process, investigating saltdiffusion in soil by using radiotracing techniques, assessing the influenceof the Hess-Murray Law on suspension flow through ramified structures, andsewage sludge flow and drying characteristics in paddle dryers.
