The McKaig Journal is a joint effort, with entries by both William and Priscilla McKaig. It spans the fifteen years from 1851-1866 and records the social, economic, religious and political life of a well-to-do family of Cumberland, Maryland. The diary records the effects of the Civil War and the changes that resulted from this conflict. Mr. McKaig was a lawyer, state legislator and president of the Frostburg Coal Company. The journal conveys upper-middle-class family life in a small city, and is a particularly good record of domestic economics.
