The R101 airship's trial flight [October 1st] before its intended flight to India (58ft).Note: On October 4th the R101 left Cardington at 19:39pm at the start of its voyage to India. Just before 2:00 am the following morning the airship was above Beauvais in France when, during a storm, it crashed into a hillside, exploded and was completely destroyed by fire. 48 of the 54 on board were killed including the air minister Sir Sefton Brancker, Lord Thomson, the airship's captain Wing Commander Colmore and its chief designer Lt. Col. Richmond. The bodies of the victims were brought to London and laid in state at Westminster Hall, where they were visited by huge crowds.
