Summary
Elizabeth Allston was a member of a well-to-do South Carolina plantation family. Her father, Robert Allston, was one of the most successful ante-bellum rice planters, and served his state as surveyor-general, member of the legislature and governor.
Her diary is a valuable record of plantation life, and the effects of the Civil War on this privileged class.
