- Summary
- A general history of the grain alcohol and gasohol program shows that the first widespread evidences of blending agriculturally derived ethyl alcohol and gasoline dates back to the 1930s when an alcohol-blended fuel called Agrol was sold and distributed in Nebraska and surrounding area. Anoher alcohol-blended fuel was called Alky-Gas distributed in the same area in the 1940s. An alcohol plant was established in Nebraska during WWII. In 1968, the Agricultural Products Industrial Utilization Committee was established to administer the Nebraska Grain Alcohol Program. The ultimate goal of the committee was to obtain the construction and completion of one or more ethyl alcohol plants in Nebraska. Projects of the committee are reviewed. A major program was designed to test 200 proof anhydrous ethanol instead of alcohol in gasohol. The project was termed the Gasohol Two Million Mile Road Test and a fleet of road vehicles were used. Results of the test completed in 1977 showed the experiment to be successful. Other tests are described. A significant development has been the opening of a service station in Lincoln, Nebraska, selling gasohol.
