Testing of the Negri Bossi number V-12 development progressed satisfactorily and indicates: The increasing-volume screw configuration yields the best performance; the screw specific power consumption is better at lower speed; the screw delivery rate is essentially independent of the gas back pressure; the feeder performance is significantly affected by the size distribution of the input coal in the case of hot extrusion; and continued testing with additional screw configurations and parameters is essential for successful development of the large size feeder. The analytical study of the screw parameters indicates that reducing the friction between the coal and screw is the most effective way to improve the feeder performance. In addition, for successful cold extrusion, the coal plug ahead of the screw plays a very critical role.
