This collection consists of a photocopy of an 89-page historical essay of the New York City Photo League by Bethune, written in 1976 for a Journalism course at the University of Minnesota and later developed into a 1979 Ph. D. thesis with the title, The New York City Photo League. This left-leaning league of photographers (1936-1951) sought to document labor strife and activism.

Beverly Moore Bethune submitted a 216-page dissertation, "The New York City Photo League: a Political History, " in 1979 to the University of Minnesota for a doctorate in mass communications. She later taught journalism and photojournalism at the University of Georgia.
