Thesis. An ultra-high vacuum system containing a four grid Retarding Field Energy Analyzer was constructed and its supporting electronics developed to explore the feasibility of usefully measuring chemical shifts in the energy of Auger electrons using a combination LEED- AES type of apparatus. The availability of such chemical shift information is extremely important in determining the chemical composition of a thin surface layer since it would provide information on the state of chemical bonding of the atoms involved. LEED and AES studies were carried out on the (lOO) face of V metal. Characteristic- loss measurements were performed on V metal and V/sub 2/O/sub 3/ for the primary beam energy range of l00 eV to 700 eV. AES chemical shift studies were carried out on V/sub 2/O/sub 4/, VO, VN, VC, V/sub 2/S/sub 3/ and VS/sub 2/. (MCW)
