Summary

The first study described here was intended to produce, identify and investigate the magnetic properties of a recently reported ⁶S_5/2 metastable state of atomic nitrogen. However, we were unable to demonstrate its existence among the constituents which we could detect in the beam of the discharge products of the nitrogen molecule.
