- Summary
- Header: Answer of the Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas sachems to his Excel. the Governor Proposition made att y City Hall of Albany, y 6th day of August 1687 annoq Rogi Regis Jacob 2 interpreted by Akus Corne Cico. The Governor suggested it would be better for the tribes to make peace with him, considering what had happened with the treaty made three years ago. The tribal spokesmen went through the events of the last three years, the battles, land seizures, atrocities, etc. when they were finally overwhelmed by the French numbers. They asked the Governor to arrange an exchange of prisoners with the Governor of Canada. The Five Nations offered to try to make peace with the Ottawas, but there were other tribes with whom they felt it would not be possible. At some point, the Jesuits had come into the area, converted some of their people, and took the group off to southern Canada to live. The local people would like those tribal members to come back. The sachems suggested a location for a fort [Canajoharie] and also told about a group living at Kill van Koll who made a poison the Governor and the Five Nations might find useful in warfare.
