- Summary
- This paper was sent me by the Governor of Pennsylvania and is certified by the Secretary. Header: At a Council held at Philadelphia, Saturday, the eighth day of November 1755, A.M. The Lt. Governor and four Council members, Chief Scarrooyady, and interpreters. The Chief told the story of two messengers who had come to the Susquehanna River Indians and told them that if they did not want to fight the English, they had better leave. The French and their Indian allies were coming and would kill all the English and any Indians that stood with them. One party would attack Carlisle, one would clear out the river, and one more group would go after Conrad Weiser. All the Indians but the Chickasaw were allied with the French, so the numbers were large. Then the Chief wanted to speak to the Assembly, so that was arranged for 3:00. At that time, the Chief spoke to the Assembly, the Council, and the Governor, with Conrad Weiser interpreting. The Chief said he had warned his friends of very serious storms and was here to do the same to the English. Will you stand and fight? If you won't, we will all leave so we can be safe. He categorically denied any part in Braddock's defeat and was offended by the accusation. The Governor told the Assembly he needed an answer to the Chief's question--he could not respond for all.
