- Gerald G. Eggert was born April 12, 1926, in Berrien County, Michigan. He received his bachelor's in history from Western Michigan University in 1949, his master's in history from the University of Michigan in 1951 and his doctorate in American history from the University of Michigan. He joined the Pennsylvania State University faculty in 1965, formerly holding teaching positions at the University of Maryland and Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Acting head of the Department of History from 1976 to 1977, he also served briefly as the director of graduate studies. He was head of the Department of History from 1980 to 1985 and served as head of the University Committee on Teacher Preparation in 1985. His research centered on labor and business history. He authored several books including Railroad labor disputes: the beginning of federal strike policy; Richard Olney: evolution of a statesman; and Steelmasters and labor reform, 1886-1923. He retired after 26 years of service on September 27, 1991.
