- Surveys the advent of the imperial age with Ch'in and the expansion of the empire under Han (221 B.C. to 220 A.D.). The short-lived Ch'in dynasty was replaced in 202 B.C. by Han, which based its rule on Confucian theories and set the tone for an ongoing political system. During the Han dynasty, the Great Wall was built, a central army was formed, and medical and meteorological advancements were made. The empire expanded south to Vietnam and east to Korea and opened its borders to the West with the Silk Road.
