Summary
Mound Laboratory, under the direction of the AEC Division of Isotopes Development, has the responsibility for supplying encapsulated plutonium-238 and polonium-210 for heat source applications. This program includes the areas of fuel form synthesis and characterization, fuel form-container material compatibility studies, capsule design, and specific applications and system evaluations. Current progress and the direction of future efforts in these areas are summarized. /sup 210/Po and /sup 238/Pu isotopic fuels studies conducted at Mound Laboratory are described along with pertinent chemical, physical, and nuclear information concerning the various fuel forms and containment materials. Fuel form synthesis and fuel characteristics have been studied in the development of stable, high-temperature fuel forms. Experiments to establish the compatibility of candidate fuel forms with various encapsulating materials will assure containment of the isotopes during mission life. /sup 238/Pu metal has been used for a number of SNAP applications. Capsule capabilities and design considerations are presented to offer guidance in future /sup 238/Pu heat source capsule design.
