- Summary
- The areas of radiation chemistry investigated in the last contract period include: ion-molecule reactions (charge exchange) in the gas phase, formation of radicals and the kinetics of their disappearance in a variety of organic solids, ion surface collisions and the behavior of low temperature organic matrices. Specific information which has been developed includes the following (1) cross sections have been measured for a number of ions in the metastable excited state (N0{sup +} and 0{sub 2}{sup +}) and related to the energy deficit ({delta}E) for the reaction by an empirical equation developed by Hasted. (2) Fragmentation patterns for a number of molecular ions in the energy range 50-200ev striking a metal target have been established. (3) The important fact that much of the kinetics of atom addition to olefins at low temperatures is controlled infrared heating from the filament which is used to produce the atoms was established. (4) The production and decay of radicals in the nematic phase of p-azoxyanisole has been studied.
