Summary
The purpose of this report is to provide energy policymakers and analysts with information on the past and current financial condition of the investor-owned electric utilities (IOUs). This analysis indicated that significant changes have occurred in the financial condition of the electric utility industry since the early 1970's. The analysis is developed within a framework that covers the electric utility industry in its entirety, but focuses on the unique financial problems confronting the IOUs. It examines the causal factors that contributed to the financial problems confronting the IOUs since the early 1970's. 22 tables.
