Focus of the investigation is upon creep cavitation in metals with particular emphasis upon AISI type 304 stainless steel. The investigation consists of both experimental and analytical phases. Work in the experimental phase of the investigation is concentrated upon image analyzing computer measurements of cavitation under condition of uniaxial and multiaxial stress. The analytical portion of the investigation involves two efforts. The first of these is the development of a nonlinear finite element code which will allow the prediction of the time-varying stress and deformation fields in specimens with complex biaxial states of stress. The second involves micromechanical modeling of probabilistic effects in creep cavitation.
