- Summary
- The broad objective of this research program is to conduct a systematic investigation of the surface properties of coal and to relate them to coal utilization. Initial work is involved with quantification of oxygen functional groups on the surface of coal. Specifically, this report summarizes proximate and ultimate analysis of various available coals, as well as a partial review of oxygen functional group analysis techniques. Results using these analysis techniques, specifically the potentiometric titration of carboxyl and phenolic oxygen functional groups, are presented in conjunction with a new approach to assess coal wettability. This approach uses a film flotation cell developed for assessing coal producing lyophobicity-lyophilicity. Results of coal surface characterization using this technique are available for graphite, as well as for several Western and Eastern bituminous coals. 15 references, 9 figures, 2 tables.
