- Summary
- A cooperative venture has been established between a minority university and a minority-owned business enterprise, with the support of the US Department of Energy, to develop and commercialize an advanced concept in fluid bed combustion. This technology, if successfully developed, will permit coal to be burned in US industrial facilities in an environmentaly acceptable manner, at a cost competitive with oil fired steam generators. The technology has a larger application in the generation of steam from coal in utility boilers. The Staged Cascade Fluid Bed Combustor (SCFBC) is an advanced concept in Fluid Bed Combustion developed by personnel at Energy and Environmental Engineering, Inc. and at Howard University. The technology provides the potential for burning coal for steam raising, at a cost competitive with oil fired steam generators, while substantially reducing both sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide emissions normaly associated with coal fired boilers. Coal is burned in the presence of limestone in fluid bed boilers to capture sulfur oxides released during combustion. The SCFBC has the potential of reducing limestone requirements by half while maintaining the same degree of sulfur oxide control. Preliminary evaluations of the SCFBC show that this system has the potential of generating steam with a 19% savings in capital cost and a 16% savings in operating cost over present generation Atmospheric Fluid Bed Boilers. 20 figs., 25 tabs.
