A method of establishing ignition conditions and plasma operating regimes over large regions of parameters space (R/sub 0//a, b/a, aB/sub 0/2/q, etc.) under various physics assumptions (chi/sub e/, chi/sub i/, q/sub psi/, ..beta../sub crit/, n/sub crit/, etc.) with a simple systematic global model is presented. Contour plots of ignition, supplementary power, and plasma heating and operating windows are generated. These are then used to analyze the potential physics design space, operating regimes, and plasma performance characteristics of small (R/sub 0/ approx. 1 to 2 m), high field (B/sub 0/ approx. 8 to 13 T) ignition experiments that are currently being considered by the US Tokamak Ignition Design Studies.
