This technical progress report covers the progress made during the period 22 January through 21 April 1986. The measurements of the solids turbulent stresses and turbulent mixing in a fluidized bed were made by using the Computer-Aided Particle Tracking Facility (CAPTF) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign operating in the single and multi-particle tracking modes. The turbulent stresses and the experimentally derived eddy diffusivities were obtained in an effort to understand the governing equations of solids dynamics. By analogy, the eddy diffusivities were also used for the numerical simulation of solids mixing in the fluidized bed. Heat transfer between particle-particle and particle-wall impact was also studied analytically. The process is one component of the overall heat transfer process in fluidized beds. 4 refs., 5 figs.
