Some naturally occurring proteins bind metals with remarkable specificity and affinity. These properties could be useful for recovering valuable metals from dilute solution or for removal of toxic metals from waste-water. We discuss the chemical syntheses and properties of several model peptides which are based on the sequence of metal-binding protein metallothionein. Also, we describe novel techniques for determining the metal-binding properties of these synthetic peptides. These techniques are also applicable to the evaluation of naturally occurring metal-binding proteins. 16 refs., 5 figs.
