- Summary
- A promising design approach is determined for an intermediate sized (60 kW) 3-phase utility interactive photovoltaic power conditioning subsystem. Three candidate designs included one incorporating 60 Hz transformer isolation and two incorporating intermediate frequency, 540 Hz, transformer isolation. The 60 Hz-isolation system consists of a push-pull 5 kHz PWM down-converter feeding the 60 Hz transformer; the 3-phase version of the system combines three identical single-phase units. The first 540 Hz-isolation system consists of three separate 540 Hz center-tapped transformers each driven by a 10-20 kHz PWM down-converter with the 540 Hz waveform generated for the entire 3-phase unit by two active switches and six steering diodes; each phase has its own secondary demodulation switches to generate the 60 Hz waveform. The second 540-Hz-isolation system is a bridge version of the first and does not need the center-tapped transformer required by the first system. Analyses showed that the designs of the first two converters were sound but that the design of the second 540 Hz-isolation converter places undue voltage stresses on the power switches and thus should be dropped from further consideration. Further analyses of the performance parameters of the remaining two designs showed the design of the remaining 540 Hz-isolation system to be the ''best'' of the two. A detailed design and analysis of this system showed it to have a full-load efficiency of 96.6% and a selling price of .14/W.
