- Summary
- Hundreds of studies have manipulated representative indicators like names and images to reveal the effects of race, gender, religion, and other social categories on person perception, attitudes, and behaviors. Most of these studies deploy static text and images. Less investigated is the medium of video, despite its prevalence. This disparity in modality-although unsurprising-limits researchers' ability to generalize these findings to our current media environment. This case study describes lessons learned from producing original video content for a series of experimental studies investigating demographic representation. In this research, 11 videos were produced to assess the absence of race and gender groups from a larger community across three studies. After discussing the process of producing videos and deploying these videos in an online experimental platform, several recommendations are described for researchers interested in developing and deploying original video-based content for experimental studies. First, video content should begin and end with the research question, utilizing only the tools required to produce the manipulation. Second, although video may seem like a direct evolution of more traditional methods deploying text and image manipulations, researchers must incorporate measures that assess participant attitudes toward the video content itself as a potential moderator and mediator. Finally, researchers should control the user experience to the best of their ability and collect unobtrusive metadata to account for the almost-infinite ways that participants can engage with the content, especially when conducting these studies online.
