- Summary
- The data in this exemplar take the form of reflections upon the experience of undertaking ethnographic research in a boxing gym. The main concern of these data is to provide an opportunity to reflect upon a particular research project, which highlights the role of the researcher in relation to their field of research and raises questions about how researchers can engage with their own impact upon the field of research and the relationality of the research process. The particular focus of the data in this section are the field notes produced after revisiting the gym to make a film about boxing and art for the Irish Television company Raidi?d Teilif?Us ??ireann (RTE) in 2010. The data are provided by Professor Kath Woodward from the Open University. The first reflexive field note was made after a preliminary visit to the gym and forms the data section. The second reflects on watching the boxing film discussed in the first note and forms part of the analysis. These data provide a source for developing some mechanisms for understanding the relationship between the researcher and the field of research, which include both reflecting upon the site of research and of seeing oneself in the field, albeit in this case in revisiting the site of earlier fieldwork and of making a film which was not explicitly produced for research purposes. The dataset will be of most interest to those who want to consider the impact that the role of the researcher has on an ethnographic or other qualitative research site.
