Challenges in combining primary and secondary interview data to explore the innovation complementarities of unicorns / Eneli Kindsiko, Maret Ahonen, and Maaja Vadi
When seeking to conduct qualitative interviews with a hard-to-reach and tough-to-schedule group of informants (e.g. top managers, CEOs, and founders), researchers often face difficulties. To leverage this challenge, there is a possibility to complement the primary interview data with existing secondary interview data. However, mixing primary and secondary data in case of a very specific and narrow research topic can result in many practical challenges, especially when one makes the switch in the middle of the research process. This case describes one such explorative data collection experience. We explored the question, "How do innovation complementarities occur across time in case of unicorns; that is, start-ups which have reached a valuation of US $1 billion or more?" For this, we combined primary and secondary interviews with the key informants-the founders of unicorns.Readers will learn not only how difficulties and practical challenges can arise when combining primary and secondary interview data, but also, when an initial research plan fails. Furthermore, readers will learn how to modify your research design during the process itself. This case will be of high value to all researchers who are considering non-traditional and highly exploratory qualitative study designs.
