- Summary
- While conducting a research project on how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals learn about sex, I discovered many benefits of using a mixed-methods approach. Combining qualitative interviews, quantitative surveys, and direct observation, I was able to uncover much more detailed information about my research topic than would have been possible using any single method. Qualitative interviews provided in-depth insight into participants' experiences of learning about queer sex and identities while growing up. The use of open-ended interview questions allowed participants to guide our understanding of this topic, so that our prior expectations didn't dictate how we collected data. Quantitative surveys complemented these findings by uncovering patterns and revealing which sources of information participants most relied on when learning about sex. A direct observational task was then used to investigate how LGBT people learn about sex by using the internet. This task revealed the specific steps LGBT people use when looking up sexual health information, allowing us to evaluate the accuracy and efficacy of online, self-directed sex education among this cohort. Using a mixed-methods approach enabled triangulation of evidence, ensuring a robust analysis of LGBT individuals' sexual education experiences. This paper shows that embracing diverse methodologies can yield a more comprehensive understanding of complex topics than relying on any one method alone.
