Summary
This case study revisits and shares original research conducted in British Columbia's southern interior region focusing on Métis identity. Through interviews with 20 Métis participants, the study explored how participants perceived and defined Métis identity. Employing narrative analysis and critical discourse analysis to analyze participant interviews and understand the construction of Métis identity, the study acknowledges power relations embedded in participants' language and contextualizes their narratives within the cultural context. The findings revealed diverse meanings and understandings of Métis identity influenced by participants' proximity to Métis families, communities, and urban Indigenous organizations. The use of narrative analysis enabled a nuanced examination of language practices, including resistance to dominant discourses, but the case study also highlights the limitations of Western research approaches and emphasizes the incorporation of Indigenous methodologies. It addresses the challenges of interpreting participant narratives and advocates for a collaborative approach involving the collective analysis of stories through a Talking Circle process. By reading this case study, readers will gain insights into the application of narrative analysis in research while learning about the importance of incorporating Indigenous methodologies and adopting a more collaborative and context-sensitive research approach to challenge traditional data-analysis methods.
