- Summary
- An industry adage held that "there are two types of rental car companies: those that lose money and Enterprise." Jack Taylor founded the company that became Enterprise Rent-A-Car in 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri. Taylor established Enterprise offices in neighborhoods rather than airports because he believed Americans would welcome a local option for renting cars when their vehicles were being repaired. In 2020, Enterprise Holdings (EH), the parent company of Enterprise, National, and Alamo, generated $22.5 billion in revenue from its global operations. The company and its affiliates owned nearly 1.7 million cars and trucks, making it the world's largest car rental company. The company's three brands were present in almost every segment of the global car rental market and had rental offices within 15 miles of 90 percent of the US population. More than 60 million customers drove more than 25 billion miles in EH cars yearly. As the only consistently profitable player in an unprofitable industry, Enterprise had built a solid and sustainable competitive advantage. Chrissy Taylor, the granddaughter of the company's founder and daughter of its longestserving CEO, was serving as CEO of Enterprise Holdings. Taylor had spent her entire career in the family-owned business, but like all Enterprise employees, she started as a management trainee at a branch office. She was determined to continue the legacy of her family's company, which her father famously described as being committed to three things: "listening to and satisfying our customers, creating opportunities for our employees, and achieving long-term, sustainable growth."
