- Summary
- It is easy to look to the internet to solve most problems. Simple searches have become much more sophisticated, especially with the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. AI is the simulation or imitation of human behavior. In writing, this technology is everywhere you look. With more access to information than ever, academic writing can seem especially difficult because these tools are often designed as marketing tools, meaning that the algorithm's purpose is to sell an idea or concept. AI tools quickly summarize data in seconds using algorithms and machine learning to count the recurrence of information on a given topic. The benefits of AI are significant; using these tools appropriately can save time and, in some cases, improve efficiency. It is important to learn how to identify and use AI in ways that enhance learning. AI writing tools can generate content based on a variety of perspectives, allowing one to consider multiple viewpoints and analyze their strengths and weaknesses. The practice of writing and revision helps people develop research skills, improves fact checking and academic critique, and strengthens reasoning. With practice, using AI writing tools as a resource may improve students' ability to identify potential biases, assumptions, or omissions, which can strengthen their ability to think about the importance of high-quality references. AI-generated content also may improve one's writing skills, especially related to rephrasing, rewriting, proofreading, and critiquing arguments. New companies advertise their services daily. However, with so many tools, choosing a tool and having full ownership of one's own writing can be difficult. No single policy governs the use of AI, and schools are developing policies and guidelines every day. It is essential to know that while AI is a valuable resource, using AI ethically as a writer requires understanding the technology's category, content, context, and credibility. As one works with these technologies, it is equally important to know how to use these tools ethically-in safe ways that do not compromise one's personal and academic integrity. Although university policy may not address the specific AI tool you choose to use, academic misconduct policies are designed based on behaviors. Depending on the course or assignment, the use or improper use of AI tools can be considered a form of academic misconduct. Students may be held responsible for plagiarism or misrepresenting someone else's work as their own or may be accused of academic misconduct. Using AI tools without authorization or outside the scope of appropriate use also may be a violation of contract cheating, an agreement between a company or individual to produce goods or services-in this case academic work that you should be doing. As a college student, it is important for you to understand the specific rules for using AI in writing for every class and assignment.
