- Summary
- Presents estimates of total sales and receipts of all establishments in the United States primarily engaged in retail trade. They do not include sales at retail by manufacturers, wholesalers, service establishments, and others whose primary activity is other than retail trade. Sales data exclude sales taxes and the value of merchandise returned by customers. Estimates are presented by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industry and for 4-5 industry aggregates, including GAFO (General Merchandise, Apparel and Accessories, Furniture and Other Sales), an aggregation of the following NAICS codes: 442, 443, 448, 451, 452, and 4532. NAICS code 4532 includes office supplies, stationery, and gift stores. Data are shown in current dollars, ie, not adjusted for inflation. The estimates are adjusted for seasonal variations and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes. Presents monthly estimates of sales, inventories, and inventories-to-sales ratios at retail and food services stores in the United States as derived from responses to the Monthly Retail Trade Survey (MRTS) conducted by the US Census Bureau. Estimates are both seasonally adjusted and unadjusted. The MRTS is authorized under US Code, Title 13, and provides for voluntary responses. Respondents include companies with one or more establishments that sell merchandise and related services to final consumers. The MRTS has been conducted monthly since 1951, with a new sample chosen approximately every 5 years. The sample of approximately 12,000 retail firms is drawn from the Business Register, which contains all Employer Identification Numbers (EINs) and listed establishment locations. EINs are stratified by major kind of business and sales, and randomly selected from each stratum. All firms with sales above applicable size cutoffs are selected into the survey with certainty (ie, probability equal to one) and report for all their retail establishments. Approximately 3,300 of the 12,000 firms surveyed are selected with certainty. Sales and inventories data are collected in combined mailed survey, and are supplemented by estimates for nonemployers, new employers, and missed employers obtained from benchmarking to the Annual Retail Trade Survey (ARTS). Firms selected for the survey are first stratified by major kind of business and estimated sales. Also included in the dataset are revised annual statistics on sales from the ARTS. Estimates derived from the MRTS and ARTS are widely used throughout government, academic, and business communities. For example, the Bureau of Economic Analysis uses the estimates to calculate the nation's Gross Domestic Product and the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses the estimates to develop consumer price indexes and productivity measurements.
