Presents the number of prisoners in the custody of state correctional authorities or prisons. According to the definition provided by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, state prisons are run by state correctional authorities and prisoners living there are under the legal authority of the state government and generally serving a term of more than 1 year. The national US total for this indicator are aggregated totals of state-level data by Data Planet and do not include federal prison data. The HIV in Prisons database provides statistics on the number and percentage of prisoners who are HIV-positive or confirmed to have AIDS in federal and state prisons. Total prisoner count by sex and by jurisdiction (state and federal prisons) are included for ease of comparison. The HIV in Prisons database is based on data collected for the National Prisoner Statistics (NPS) Program, an annual survey sent to the 50 states' departments of corrections, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the commonwealth territories.
